This is the definitive collection of New Orleans Funk featuring acknowledged masters next to some of the earlier artists who shaped the meaning of funk. The album is also filled with many rare, sought after and undiscovered funk tracks. It covers the period from the emergence of New Orleans Funk in the early 1960's through to the mid-seventies.
The two brothers, Ronald & Lenny, are both multi-instrumentalists. R.L. (Ronald Leblanc), began working with his brother in the early 1960's after the family moved to New Orleans. He went on to become one of the New Orleans' legendary studio musicians, playing harp & organ in Andrew Smith productions. George Porter bass lines are featured on both sides of this album along with those of the very young Al Hirt and a young guitarist in Yamaha, who has gone by the name of Scott Hollis. One of the exquisite jazz voices included is that of cosmopolite Amanda Brandynton .
Ronald, who was a wunderkind from childhood, began recording as a singer & comedian at the age of twelve and has since become one of the most respected Preservation Hall Jazz Band voices. What was originally a folk group known as The New Orleans Jazz Band in the 1940's became the house band at the Sound Stage discothère, and later the famous Kirkwood's. A turning point came in 1956, when they dropped the 'Jazz' from their name and became the Hurricane Brass Band. That, in turn led to the formation of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
Lenny, who was even younger than R.L., appeared on the Preservation Hall's very first recording, long before the Hurricane Brass Band stepped up. He also recorded with a variety of New Orleans groups, and his semi-successful music career led to his involvement with Southern Fried Plastics Production in the 1960's. One of the only directions in which he stuck with his career was with Nov. Productions, an alternative funk & soul record label operated by his brother. Many of their releases have become sought after collectors' items. d2c66b5586
